Southern Buddhism:

Transmitted from India to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, it mainly belongs to Theravada Buddhism, namely “Hinayana Buddhism”; now it is still practiced in Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, southern Vietnam, and border regions in Yunnan of China. It was spread to Western countries in the beginning of the 20th century.

Northern Buddhism:

it was taken eastward through northwest India and several countries in the Western Region along the Silk Road to China, North Korea, Japan, Vietnam and also from Nepal and Tibet to Mongolia. From the sense of doctrines, Northern Buddhism is dominated by Mahayana and it has abundant classics in Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan languages.

Tibetan Buddhism:

it is also called Lamaism and refers to a branch of Buddhism transmitted to Tibet. Together with Northern Buddhism and Southern Buddhism, they constitute the three systems of Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism is dominated by Mahayana and can be further divided into Exotoric and Esoteric Buddhism. Although incomparable to Hinayana, Sautrantika and Sarvastivadin have profound impact on Tibetan Buddhism.
